Virtual School Victoria recently hosted a hands-on gardening and sustainability incursion, giving Year 7-10 students a unique learning experience. Thanks to a grant from the Victorian Schools Garden Program, students had the opportunity to engage with real-world environmental issues and explore the science behind sustainable practices.
The incursion included two activities: lab experiments and gardening. In the lab, they measured soil pH, examined specimens under a microscope, created a fruit-and-vegetable-powered digital clock, explored windmill mechanics, and dissected flowers. Students got their hands dirty planting a variety of species in the habitat garden, leaving a lasting mark on the school grounds.
“It will be wonderful to see the garden grow over the years and know we had a positive impact on our Earth,” enthused Famie Needham, Instructional Leader – Science.
