Year 12 Australian Politics student, Olivia, recently won the My First Speech competition, organised by the Australian Parliament.
The competition aims to engage young Australians in the democratic process by encouraging students in Years 10, 11, and 12 to write and present a 90-second speech as if they were newly elected Members of Parliament.
Olivia chose an issue close to her heart – the education system.
In her well-delivered speech, she implored Government to overhaul the education system.
‘A quality education can not be behind a paywall. Not when 64 per cent of our students attend a public school,’ she argued.
In a passionate finale, Olivia declared, ‘What is best for our nation, and its future…begins with education.’
Olivia said it was an honor to win the My First Speech Competition and see her name on the Parliament website.
‘I think that politics is not only incredibly interesting, but also incredibly important. I am so happy that competitions like these exist to get my generation involved,’ she said.
As the winner, Olivia will fly to Canberra and meet the Speaker and other politicians at Parliament House.
